Painting freshly plastered walls

This requires careful preparation to ensure a smooth, long-lasting finish. Here are some tips to help you achieve the best results from Thanet Plastering in Kent.

1. Allow Plaster to Dry Completely

Drying Time: Fresh plaster needs time to cure. Depending on the thickness of the plaster and room conditions (temperature, humidity, ventilation), this can take anywhere from 3-6 days for skim coats to 2-6 weeks for thicker plaster.

Signs of Dryness: The plaster will change from a dark, wet-looking brown/pink to a light, uniform pinkish color. Wait until it's fully dry before painting.

3. Apply a Mist Coat

What is a Mist Coat?: A mist coat is a diluted first layer of paint that acts as a primer, ensuring proper adhesion of the topcoat.

How to Mix: Use a non-vinyl, water-based emulsion (typically white or light-colored matt paint) mixed with water at a ratio of 70% paint to 30% water.

Application: Apply the mist coat using a roller or brush. It will soak into the plaster and may appear patchy—this is normal

5. Apply Additional Coats

Once the mist coat is completely dry (4-6 hours), apply two coats of your chosen paint for a uniform finish.

Allow sufficient drying time between coats as per the paint manufacturer’s instructions.

2. Prepare the Surface

Clean the Surface: Gently wipe the walls with a dry or slightly damp cloth to remove any dust or residue.

Fill and Sand: Check for small imperfections or cracks and fill them with a fine filler. Once dry, sand the area smooth.

4. Choose the Right Paint

Breathable Paints: Opt for breathable emulsion paints for the first year to allow any residual moisture in the plaster to escape.

Avoid Glossy Paints: These are less forgiving on new plaster and may highlight imperfections.

6. Ensure Proper Conditions

Ventilation: Keep the room well-ventilated during painting to speed up drying and reduce fumes.

Temperature: Avoid painting in very cold or damp conditions, as it can affect drying and adhesion.

While new plaster is still settling (up to 12 months), avoid wallpapering or using heavy paints like silk emulsions that might trap moisture.

By following these tips, you'll ensure your freshly plastered walls have a professional-looking, durable paint finish!
